Where Does Sport Walking Come From?

You may be surprised to find that sport walking actually derives from skiing. Also called ‘Nordic walking’, it was originally used as a training method for cross-country skiers to use in the summertime.

This is because when walking along a trail and using walking poles to push yourself along, you’re mimicking the motions of skiing. Now, it has become its own sport, and is growing in popularity. It’s a popular trend for people who are looking for a low-impact sport that helps to explore the great outdoors!

Who is Sport Walking For?

If you can walk, you can try sport walking!

It’s ideal for people who don’t like to play team sports or work out in a gym. If you love exploring the countryside and finding new nature trails in your local area, you’ll love this sport. It’s also perfect for those with mobility issues or prior injuries, as it’s a low-impact activity that won’t put pressure on your joints. The walking poles will give you extra support, reducing your risk of experiencing pain in your back, knees and neck.

What Equipment Do You Need?

The first thing you’ll need for sport walking is a comfortable pair of walking shoes. If you need extra support or are going out on difficult terrain, you can upgrade to a pair of hiking boots.

The next thing you’ll need is a pair of walking poles. These poles come with a strap that attaches to your wrist, making them easy to carry even on long walks. They have a spike on the bottom, which allows them to dig into the ground and help you to push forward. They’re also retractable, so you can easily fold them up and put them in your bag when you’re not using them.

What are the Benefits?

Sport walking doesn’t feel like an intense exercise. That means you’ll be able to do it for longer. In fact, you might enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like exercise at all! Instead, it can feel like a social walk with friends or a relaxing wander in nature.

However, it still brings the physical and mental benefits of other exercise regimes. As well as getting your blood pumping, it improves your posture and core strength. Of course, it also burns calories, too!
